Blowing snow made for tough travel in North Dakota on Friday, and authorities said conditions could worsen as the winds picked up.
"We've got about 6 to 8 inches on the roadway now. My county road workers can't keep up. They're hitting the ditch. We have pulled all our county plows," Steele County Sheriff Wayne Beckman said at midmorning.
The National Weather Service said up to 10 inches of snow was expected along a line from Minot to Carrington. No travel was advised in Steele County, where Beckman said up to a foot of snow was expected.
Schools in eastern North Dakota delayed classes. In Barnes County, Sheriff Randy McClaflin said travel was slowed by a semi rollover along Interstate 94 east of Valley City.
McClaflin said the truck driver was taken to the hospital with head injuries. His condition was not known.
"Plows are out on the main road getting snow off. But if you're on a side road, the wind is blowing the snow so it's tough even seeing the road," the sheriff said.
Transportation supervisor Bruce Nord urged drivers to be careful.
"I guess the big thing is: No cruise control on, have seat belts and headlights on," he said.
"If you can't see, don't assume there's nothing there," Nord said. "Don't go ahead and try to pass and find out there's something in the other lane causing the snow fog."
