The Golden State came out on top in a new state-by-state survey of family-protection laws for new parents, earning an A-minus in the study’s letter-grade ranking. Conducted by the National Partnership for Women & Families, the analysis looks at laws in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The United States is one of few countries that do not guarantee working people access to paid leave, the group said. Paid leave for new parents is mandatory in many countries, but new parents here only get up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, if they can afford it. In much of the country, it doesn’t get much better than this: 17 states don’t have any laws on the books that protect working parents, and a total of 31 states earned either a D or an F. California was the only A grade, and 10 states plus Washington, D.C. earned Bs.
