A new study reveals the length of time most fathers take off work to be with their newborns.

As Father’s Day approaches, Boston College’s Center for Work and Family has released new research that’s all about new dads and paternity leave.

The vast majority of fathers surveyed – 89 percent – said it was important for employers to provide paid paternity leave. The study, which polled more than 1,000 dads at nearly 300 companies, found most men take as much paid leave as their employers offer. Sixty-seven percent of respondents had access to paid paternity leave.

But those lucky dads are in the minority. According to the Families and Work Institute, only 14 percent of U.S. employers offer paid time off for new fathers.

Most fathers in the U.S. are allotted up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave after the birth or adoption of a child through the Family and Medical Leave Act.
