Civilians across Israel raced to find shelter on Saturday morning as air-raid sirens rang out across major cities to warn of retaliatory strikes from Iran.

In the cities of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa, men, women and children were pictured running into buildings to escape the threat of rocket attacks from Iran following Israeli and U.S. strikes on the Islamic Republic overnight.

Beaches, boardwalks and hospitals emptied out as underground parking lots and overpasses filled up. Citizens were seen sprinting toward vacant buildings as security personnel wheeled patients away from exposed wards to the underground parking lot.

The Israeli military said its strikes on Iran, in coordination with the United States, targeted dozens of military sites and followed months of joint planning between the allies.

Beaches emptied out in Tel Aviv, and boardwalks were hastily taped off by police as people found themselves exposed midway through their morning.

And in the northern city of Haifa, surfers quickly came out of the water as air-raid sirens sounded.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran must not be allowed to gain nuclear arms and urged Israelis to "stand together" after Israel and the United States launched strikes against the Islamic republic on February 28.
