The first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season is also one of the largest, fastest-growing hurricanes in recorded history.
Hurricane Erin, which reached hurricane-force winds late last week, grew to a Category 5 storm before weakening as it approached the U.S. East Coast.
After bringing heavy rains to Puerto Rico, parts of the Bahamas and other islands in the region, the storm system moved north. It brought storm surges and large waves to the North Carolina coast and tropical storm conditions to Virginia’s coast. Friday it is expected to bring coastal flooding to mid-Atlantic and New England coasts.
The storm is still forecast to bring “life-threatening surf and rip currents” to the East Coast, Canada, the Bahamas and Bermuda over the next several days, according to the National Hurricane Center.
