The website for the New York Times — nytimes.com — has restored service after a two-hour outage midday Wednesday.
If you have problems getting nytimes.com to load, it could be because everyone else is trying to access the website, too.
"As you are undoubtedly aware, we are experiencing a server issue that has resulted in our e-mail and Web site being unavailable, the news outlet posted in a three-part message on its main Twitter feed, @NYTimes, at 12:47 p.m. ET. "We believe the outage is the result of an internal issue, which we expect to be resolved soon," the message continued. "We will communicate further when we have more information."
Prior to 1 p.m. ET, attempts to access the URL returned a white screen with the error message, "Http/1.1 Service Unavailable." Also, the site's mobile apps were unresponsive. At the time of the outage, a Times spokesperson told CNBC, "The site does appear to be down — we're looking into it."
At 12:23 p.m ET, the official Twitter account for the Times op-ed section tweeted, "NYT: "we believe the outage is the result of an internal issue, which we expect to be resolved soon." Earlier, the official Twitter account of the paper's Lede blog acknowledged, "We are having technical problems."
Some speculated earlier that the outage may be related to the Times' recent run-in with a group of hackers linked to China. In January, Hong Lei, spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, described hacking accusations against China as irresponsible.
