Among the most exciting announcements about the coming changes to Apple's iOS this fall is that FaceTime will will work over cellular networks, not just over Wi-Fi. But will carriers ask iPhone users to pay an additional charge for using the popular video-calling program over the cellular networks?
A report from 9to5mac.com indicates that could happen, with the site sharing a screenshot from a beta version of iOS 6 that shows FaceTime over an AT&T cellular network "requiring activation (read: a contract bolt-on) in a similar way to the Personal Hotspot feature," noted The Verge.
NBC News contacted AT&T, which said only, "We're working closely with Apple on the new developer build of iOS 6 and we'll share more information with our customers as it becomes available."
Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney said in an email to NBC News that it is "too soon for us to comment on something that isn't yet available to customers. In general, normal data charges would apply to streaming video but for this particular app, we don't yet know."
