While the world was all "blah blah blah" over Jeff Bridges unsettling and/or amazing backwards aging in the screaming neon 3-D extravaganza "Tron: Legacy," something arguably more crafty was happening weekly on the TV.
HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," named one of the ten "best television programs of the year," by the American Film Institute, received accolades for its character-driven story set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City. But Brainstorm Digital's subtle, detailed 1920s set pieces — and one horrendous war injury — are equally deserving.
The visual effects company's "Boardwalk Empire" reel reveals computer-generated scenes the casual viewer may assume actually exist. But from the rolling-surf and sand settings to the boat and a body floating in the ocean, they are but code, lovely lovely code that supports, rather than distracts, from the story and the real human actors doing a bang-up job.
And hey, high five to the whole cast for pulling off those old-timey characters on backdrops of blank walls or less.
