If you purchased a mobile device from AT&T before Oct. 7, you had 30 days to return it and cancel any service agreement you've signed in relation to it without penalties. After Oct. 7, you'll only have 14 days.

Phonescoop's Eric Zeman was among the first to call attention to this change in AT&T's return policy. We contacted the carrier for an explanation and were provided a statement:

AT&T has updated its device return policy. Consumer customers will have 14 days to return a device for any reason and cancel service without paying an Early Termination Fee. While this begins on October 7, AT&T customers will continue to have the option to update their voice and data plans at any time.

If you decide to return a device outside of the 14-day window, you may face return fees related to the device or the service agreement which you may be canceling.

It's worth noting that the other major U.S. carriers — Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and T-Mobile — have had a 14-day return policy for a while.
