It's not exactly like the past four summers, when new iPhones were unveiled and AT&T's website was overloaded, but, according to some reports, Verizon Wireless' website has been slammed since it announced Tuesday it's bringing the iPhone to its network.

"Scattered reports of downtime on the Verizon Wireless website seem to indicate that pent-up demand for the Verizon iPhone has overwhelmed the carrier's servers at times throughout the day," reported AppleInsider.

But Verizon certainly isn't waiting for customers to come to them (not that they need to): the carrier has been heavily promoting the latest addition to its cell phone family with e-mails — although still no official word on what plan costs will be.

As a Verizon customer, I "registered" for e-mail updates on information — registered for updates on information.

I immediately got a "thank you for your interest in iPhone 4 on Verizon" e-mail, which said, in part: "You'll soon receive updates and information on how to get iPhone 4 on Verizon. Stay tuned for more details." Oh, somehow you can just tell there's going to be a lot of empty bits like this flying around in e-mail land in the days ahead.

Pre-orders for the phone start Feb. 3 for existing Verizon customers. On Feb. 10, it's available to all at Verizon and Apple stores. The price will be $199 for 16GB device, $299 for 32GB model, both with 2-year plans.
