Have $3,300 and a hankering to prepare perfect rib roast? The Thermador Masterpiece steam and convection oven took us by surprise tonight, in the middle of a preview of Consumer Electronics Show gadgetry. But it's probably one of the most precise pieces of machinery around.
To use it, you fill a water reservoir, then preheat, either indicated a desired humidity or using one of the hundreds of pre-set recipes. The water trickles into the base as needed, and the oven's computer keeps the settings precise. Cooking with steam allows more accurate cooking — ever roasted a soft-boiled egg? Well now's your chance — and a way to cook larger pieces of meat without risking the chance of dry out. Thermador's spokesman said that the humidifying effect is even a cure for stale pizza. Do you hear that, there's finally a cure for stale pizza!
I want one, but I probably won't get one. At least not until I have that dream kitchen with twin Sub Zeros and a countertop immersion circulator for decimal-point-accurate sous vide. Hey, a guy can dream, right?
