Hugh Hefner may want to stick to magazine publishing and not tweeting. The Playboy founder let it be known that his magazine would be coming out in March with an iPad app by sharing that news on Twitter. Nope, not happening, not in your lifetime, or at least the lifetime of the rules Apple has set up for the kinds of content that it lets through its App Store, where programs for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch are funnelled.
And porn, or anything resembling it, is not acceptable to Apple.
As AppleInsider noted:
An application with nudity would violate the existing guidelines for App Store software, published by Apple last fall. The "Content" section of the official App Store Review Guidelines specifically prohibits pornography." Apps containing pornographic material, defined by Webster's Dictionary as 'explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings,' will be rejected," the section reads.
What Playboy is working on is a Web-based subscription for the magazine, a spokesman told Forbes' Jeff Bercovici. That subscription "will give users access to every issue of Playboy both past and present. The service will be iPad compatible and will utilize iPad functions ... We also have plans to release a non-nude version of a Playboy-branded iPad app in the coming months that adheres to all of Apple’s policies and guidelines."
Perhaps Hef's confusion is understandable. The 84-year-old is engaged to be married to 24-year-old Crystal Harris, and may be a little distracted right now.
