Verizon Wireless will be getting an iPad with an embedded CDMA network chip, said Verizon parent company CFO Francis Shammo, in an interview with Bloomberg. Sadly, that's all he said.
If you thought Verizon already had an iPad, it does. But the one currently sold is a Wi-Fi-only tablet, bundled with a MiFi wireless modem. In other words, the current Verizon iPad carries a crutch. Shammo is saying there's one that would run on Verizon the way the current 3G iPad runs on AT&T.
This kind of news stirs up the pot more than it settles things. Presumably, we can infer that when the next iPad comes out, it will come in a CDMA flavor, to be sold alongside the iPhone at Verizon stores. I don't think this means that the iPad currently entering the "end of life" phase of its existence will suddenly go native on Verizon. And I also don't think the new iPad will be 4G compatible, like Motorola's upcoming Xoom tablet. If we learn anything more, we'll be sure to share, you know, to add to your confusion. You're welcome!
