Some mobile users of Facebook — and particularly, it seems, Verizon Wireless mobile users — have been getting text messages, purportedly from Facebook itself telling them to call 911. It's some kind of weird error and users should ignore it.

Facebook itself tweeted, "Some people using Facebook Mobile on Verizon received misdirected texts referring to '911.' Verizon found and fixed the issue."

A Verizon Wireless spokesman we contacted Wednesday morning said he wasn't familiar with the problem.

It doesn't appear to be a huge issue, but it is an irritating one — many Facebook users have shared their befuddlement on Facebook's discussion page.

"I have gotten about 17 of these (messages) so far, no lie..." posted one user.

"I have gotten about 10 at this point, it was freaking me out... good to read it's not just me," posted another.

Hat tip to Valleywag, which first reportedthe glitch.

And the text/call 911 problem may be the least of your worries today, as Facebook introduces new authentication measures that we all didn't know about — until today.
