Some of us ignore our email spam folders and automatically delete what's in there. Others, who have learned that even good folks' email winds up in the that folder every now and then, check it before clearing it out. Now, Google is spiffing up its spam feature by letting you know why it marked an email as spam.

"Many of our users say the accuracy of our spam filter is one of the key reasons they love Gmail. And while we think you should never have to look in your spam folder, we know some of you may want to know why the messages there were marked as spam," writes Ela Czajka, software engineer on the Gmail blog.

"So starting today, we’ll be showing a brief explanation at the top of each of your spam messages. Simply look at any message in your spam folder and now you can find out why it was put there and learn about any potentially harmful content within the message."

The explanations are pretty straightforward: If Google detects a fishy or dangerous link, it will tell you. In the examples shown above, you have the option of clicking on "learn more" to do just that.

"Whether you prefer to leave your spam folder untouched or do some educational digging, the information will be there for you. And if you're interested in learning more, check out our new series of spam articles in the Gmail help center," Czajka wrote.
