Ding dong! The browser is dead! Which old browser? The IE 6 browser!

Maybe those aren't the actual words to that ol' song, but they're still quite true — Internet Explorer 6, the 10-year-old version of Microsoft's browser, can finally be considered dead in the United States.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

According to the Windows Team Blog, IE 6 usage in the U.S. has now officially dropped below one percent. This new statistic comes less than a year after the launch of the IE 6 Countdown site (which was intended to expedite the termination of the old browser).

According to Roger Capriotti, director of Internet Explorer marketing, "IE 6 has been the punch line of browser jokes for a while, and [the Internet Explorer team has] been as eager as anyone to see it go away."

Of course, while IE 6 is dead and buried in the U.S., it's still alive in the hearts of some folks around the world — particularly the 7.7 percent of the population who still insists on using the antiquated browser — so Microsoft will be continuing to push for its total annihilation.
