Scott Kelly can now boast that he’s spent more cumulative time away from Earth than any other American. Friday marked a record 383rd day living in space for the NASA astronaut and commander of the current Expedition 45 space station crew. The previous record was 382 cumulative days held by American astronaut Mike Fincke.
Kelly, 51, who is well past the midway point of a yearlong mission in space, isn’t done breaking spaceflight records. Oct. 29 will mark his 216th consecutive day in space, a day longer than the current record for the single-longest spaceflight by an American held by astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, according to NASA.
Kelly is scheduled to return to Earth on March 3, 2016. At that time, he will have compiled 522 total days living in space during four missions.
He's still got a ways to go to catch up to Gennady Padalka. The Russian cosmonaut has spent 879 days in space over five separate trips, more than any other person.
