Apple paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday by devoting its entire homepage to the slain civil-rights icon. The updated homepage featured a picture of King accompanied by this message: "Today we reflect on the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the work that continues in service of the broader concerns of humanity." Apple CEO Tim Cook also tweeted several references to King and some of his notable quotes. Cook cited the influence of King when he announced publicly last fall that he is gay.
Monday’s revamped homepage tribute was not without controversy. Unlike federal workers, Apple employees do not get the MLK holiday off. That’s prompted a petition drive to make MLK Day a paid holiday. (Instead of a paid day off, Apple has encouraged employees to volunteer as a way to honor King. In turn, Apple, through its matching gifts program, is contributing $50 for every employee hour worked, the company told NBC Bay Area.)

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, in an open letter Monday to the technology industry, urged tech firms to do more than pay lip service. "This Monday only a handful of technology companies will close their doors and honor the King Holiday," Jackson wrote. "For those that don’t, make clear your commitment to diversity and inclusion. Make clear your alignment with civil and human rights."
