It won't be out until the fall, but Apple's reinvented Mac Pro stole the show Monday when it was previewed at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
The computer looks like it belongs on a spaceship instead of near a desk.
It's 9.9 inches tall, just a shadow of its former self, size-wise, yet extremely powerful.
"The new system is super fast, with flash memory 10X faster than the previous model's hard drive, Thunderbolt 2 connectivity for external drives and monitors, dual workstation GPUs giving 2.5X better video performance than the last generation, and supports 4K-resolution displays. Pretty hot, especially give then fact that it's a gnome next to the current-gen tower," writes Wilson Rothman, NBC's Tech Editor.
The Mac Pro, geared to professionals, will be available "later this year," Apple said, and it will be "assembled" in the U.S. The company didn't give any pricing on the computer. But the current model starts at $2,499.
"With the latest Xeon processors, dual FirePro GPUs, ECC memory, PCIe-based flash and Thunderbolt 2, all built around a revolutionary thermal core, the next generation Mac Pro is the most radical Mac yet," said Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, in a statement.
"All this performance and expandability is packed into a dramatic new design that’s one-eighth the volume."
