The New England Patriots weren't the only winners last night -- the Super Bowl also made history on social media.
Twitter hailed the Super Bowl XLIX between Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots as "the most tweeted @Superbowl ever," with a record-breaking 28.4 million tweets during the broadcast, beating last year's 24.9 million, according to the social media platform. Fifteen million more people were talking about the game on Facebook this year over last year, totaling 65 million individuals and 265 million posts, links and comments.
The 49th football frenzy did not beat the most tweeted sports game, however, with 2014's FIFA soccer semi-final between Germany and Brazil gaining 35.6 million tweets.
According to Twitter, the three key moments in Sunday night's game were when the Patriots won, Malcolm Butler intercepted a pass by Russell Wilson and Katy Perry finished her halftime performance.
On Facebook, the most Super Bowl chatter came from the New England states of New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maine and Massachusetts, with the Seahawks’ home state of Washington coming in fifth.
When it came to NFL players, Tom Brady was the most-discussed New England Patriots player, while Marshawn Lynch came in as the most talked-about Seahawks player.
