With "GamerGate" in the headlines, harassment of women on social media has become a hot-button issue. On Thursday, Twitter officially teamed up with non-profit Women, Action, & the Media to do something about it. The group has developed a Twitter harassment reporting tool that lets people give detailed reports on how, when and by whom they were harassed. "Anyone who is being targeted by harassment should have options," Jaclyn Friedman, executive director of Women, Action, & the Media, told NBC News via email. "If they choose not to report, we respect that choice. But reporting via our form helps us help them in the short-term, and helps make Twitter a safer place for women to express themselves in the long-term." The group has been designated an "authorized reporter" by Twitter, meaning it can flag harassment reports for expedited review. It's also collecting data on how women are harassed online with the hope of helping Twitter determine what areas it can improve on. "We're looking forward to working with them on those improvements in 2015," she said.
