Home Depot is officially the latest big retailer to suffer a payment data breach, the company confirmed Monday. It's unclear how many customers were affected, but Home Depot said the breach could have hit customers who used debit or credit cards at its U.S. and Canadian stores from “April forward.”
The company released few other details in its statement as it "continues to determine the full scope, scale and impact of the breach." At this point "there is no evidence that debit PIN numbers were compromised," and the breach doesn’t appear to have affected physical stores in Mexico or HomeDepot.com. The confirmation comes six days after noted security blog Krebs on Security reported that a trove of purported stolen data had appeared on black market sites. Home Depot quickly said it was investigating the September 2 report. Now that the breach is confirmed, the company said it will offer services including credit monitoring to any customer who used a credit or debit card at a Home Depot store from April onward.
