'Tis the season for end-of-year lists, and Apple is no exception: Wednesday brought the company's picks for the best apps and games for iOS. If you were on the lookout for time-wasters for holiday travel and downtime, look no further.
App of the year goes to Periscope, the live-video app that makes it easy to see what anyone sees, as they see it. First runner-up was Enlight, a full-featured image editor made with iPhones in mind. Third place went to Robinhood, a popular and free stock-trading app.

On the games side, the top dog was Lara Croft GO, a puzzler themed after the "Tomb Raider" franchise that received near-universal acclaim from reviewers. Fallout Shelter, another tie-in (this time to the post-apocalyptic "Fallout 4"), charmed with its addictive shelter-management gameplay and unique graphics. Third was Mr Jump, a one-button platformer that set itself above the competition with clever design.
Most innovative app went to Workflow, which lets users easily customize and coordinate actions like calculating tips and getting walking directions to the nearest coffee shop. The most innovative game was Dark Echo, which had players using only sound to navigate a dark, threatening environment.

The most-downloaded and most lucrative items of the year were the Ellen-certified Heads Up! game, Minecraft, and the ad-free version of the massively popular Trivia Crack. Clash of Clans, Game of War, and Candy Crush Saga also raked in the cash.
