Hit anonymous sharing app Secret finally made its way to Android and users around the globe on Wednesday after being enjoyed by iOS users for several months. The release also brings a few new features to the controversial service.
For those not up to date on the hot new apps prized by tech-savvy early adopters, Secret lets you post messages and images anonymously that show up in a stream of similar messages. They generally come from friends and friends of friends, and you can comment anonymously, like them anonymously, and so on.
The app and others like it have been the subject of criticism due to the tendency for people to use such a service for mean and passive-aggressive purposes rather than funny or touching ones. It's possible that someone might confess to an unrequited love, but it's more likely they'll chide their waitress for being overweight or say how they've always hated a coworker.
At any rate, the app is now available for Android and internationally, so perhaps an influx of fresh users will change the cast of the conversation.
In addition to making it available to the millions of Android users out there, the update adds separate streams for just friends and the larger network of Secret users — an Android exclusive for now. The creators are also working on adding ways of more directly interacting with your friends, and said in a blog post that there are "more surprises on the way."
