Special Delivery: Watch Google's 'Project Wing' Drones Airdrop Packages

What's that up in the sky? Is it a bird? A plane? No, it's a delivery drone. Google's Project Wing, announced in 2014 as a nascent effort to use small drones to deliver packages, is having a bit of real-world testing in Arizona as part of the company's annual Zeitgeist get-together of global leaders and thinkers.

A video of the custom-designed drone was posted Monday by Sequoia Capital's Aaref Hilaly to Twitter, and later retweeted by Google CEO Sundar Pichai:

Another video appeared on the Instagram account of Mitch Joel, better showing the package delivery mechanism itself:

The drones are test-delivering food and drinks ordered via an app distributed to attendees of Zeitgeist. Google confirmed to NBC News that the videos show Project Wing in action.

"Project Wing is going well, and delivering small packages at the Google Zeitgeist event has been good practice for our team," a Google representative wrote in an email.

Google isn't the only company pursuing automated package delivery. E-commerce giants like Amazon and Alibaba are working hard on the idea of citywide delivery — if they can get clearance from the FAA. And smaller companies are attempting more modest feats, like this FAA-sanctioned medicine delivery in Virginia.

No word on when Project Wing will wing it to other cities.
