Kids have always colored outside the lines, but this is something else. Crayola's "Color Alive" books let kids color in various characters and situations, like any other book, but let them view their creations in 3-D in a companion augmented reality app. The original Color Alive sets came out last year. Now Disney is working on its own version that adds a fun new twist: coloring in the 3-D model as you go, rather than just rendering it once at the end.
This video makes it look like a load of fun, though whether it's easy to color and watch the screen at the same time is less clear:
At the very least, kids will be delighted to see the characters come alive with any accouterments and decorations added to the page. The app even fills in parts that aren't visible in the drawing, though that looks to be a bit more of a work in progress.

For now, this app is still in the research phase — but perhaps they'll give Crayola a call and join forces. The tech was shown off earlier this week at the IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality in Japan.
