Sony announced a pair of new point-and-shoot cameras on Tuesday that it claims are the world's smallest to feature a 30x zoom. Such long telephoto lenses usually blow up the size of these "superzoom" cameras to nearly DSLR size, but the HX90V and WX500 appear to be much more pocketable. Their sensor packs 18 megapixels but isn't very big, meaning low-light shots won't be the best, especially at the long end of the zoom — though that's true of most superzooms. These also have a flippable LCD (for selfies, of course), built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS.
For $330 you get all the above in the WX500. For an extra hundred dollars the HX90V (above) adds a pop-up electronic viewfinder like that found on the nicer RX100 III camera. It also gets a number of extra dials and controls, which should appeal more to serious photographers looking for a compact with a long reach.
Both cameras should be available in June at online and brick-and-mortar camera stores.
