Apple has made strides in slashing its carbon footprint, but admits there’s room for improvement. The tech company released an environmental responsibility report Thursday that found its first-ever decline in carbon emissions (3 percent) from fiscal year 2012 to 2013.
Apple began tracking the data in 2009. It's also the company's first report since bringing on Lisa Jackson, former EPA chief, as vice president of environmental initiatives. Between 2011 and 2013, the company sliced its carbon footprint from energy by about a third. It attributed the decline partially to its investment in 100-percent renewable energy sources to power 145 U.S. retailers and all of its data centers. Apple's water use rose considerably since last year, a spike caused in part by expansion projects, including the construction of the Apple Campus 2. “While we’re constantly improving, we’re also constantly reporting — even when our numbers aren’t as good as we’d like them to be,” the report stated.
