More than 900 same-sex couples in Utah who tied the knot after a federal judge green-lightened gay marriage are in "legal limbo" now that the Supreme Court has issued a temporary hold, the state's top lawyer said Monday.

Attorney General Sean Reyes said his staff is evaluating the legal status of the wave of marriages that were performed after the Dec. 20 ruling.

"This is precisely the type of uncertainty we were hoping to avoid," Reyes said.

Utah officials had asked the district judge who legalized gay marriages to put in place an immediate stay, but he declined, as did the federal appeals court.

But the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday issued a stay, blocking new marriages until there's a decision on the appeal.
