Next week, Barack Obama will be the first sitting U.S. president to visit Cuba since Calvin Coolidge nearly 90 years ago. In a tweet today, the Secret Service posted a photo of the historic event.
Coolidge visited Cuba to address the Pan-American Conference of Western Hemisphere leaders in Havana in January 1928 during a time when America had much influence and control over the island nation. After the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1961, ties between the two countries were severed.
Obama has moved towards normalizing relations with the communist country and loosening the U.S. trade embargo. These efforts have been rebuked throughout conservative circles, including presidential hopefuls.
