SOCHI, Russia — A German athlete at the Winter Olympics has failed a doping test, the German Olympic Committee said Friday — the first publicly reported positive case at the Sochi Games.

The committee did not name the athlete. It said that it was informed by the International Olympic Committee on Thursday that the German athlete had given a sample that showed an “abnormal reading.”

A second sample was to be opened Friday, and a hearing was scheduled before the IOC disciplinary committee.
