The statue representing "Liberty" holds a pencil aloft bearing the "I am Charlie" motto at the Place de la Republique in Paris early on January 13. The plaza has been the centerpoint of rallies expressing solidarity with the victims of the massacre at the offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and pencils and pens have been used as a defiant symbol of support for freedom of speech.
