French police were on the hunt Friday for Hayat Boumeddiene — the alleged female accomplice of the hostage-taker at a kosher market in Paris, U.S. law enforcement officials said. Police raided the market Friday afternoon after an unknown number of people were held captive. The fate of the suspected hostage-taker — 32-year-old Amedy Coulibaly — wasn't immediately known, but Paris prosecutors said a gunman was killed. Multiple French news outlets reported some hostages were also killed, but that information was not confirmed by NBC News.
An alert was initially issued earlier Friday for both Coulibaly and Boumeddiene, 26. They were being sought in connection with the fatal shooting of a policewoman in Paris on Thursday. The officer's death came less than a day after two brothers slaughtered a dozen people at the offices of the Paris magazine Charlie Hebdo, police said. Authorities suggest Coulibaly was connected with the brothers, Cherif and Said Kouachi, who were killed Friday in a separate hostage standoff.
