Escaped inmate Richard Matt was shot three times in the head and died from severe skull fractures and brain injuries, according to autopsy results released Sunday.
Matt, a convicted murderer, was shot and killed Friday by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer after nearly three weeks on the run while hundreds of authorities searched for Matt and David Sweat, who broke free from Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York on June 6.
The autopsy, performed at Albany Medical Center by Dr. Michael Sikirica, showed that Matt also had bug bites, blisters and minor abrasions "consistent with living in the woods for three weeks," according to a statement from New York State Police.
More than 1,300 officers, up from 1,200 Saturday, searched for Sweat Sunday in the towns of Malone and Duane near where Matt was killed Friday, according to police. There is no indication that the inmates were together immediately before Matt's death but no evidence to suggest otherwise, authorities have said.
Items possibly left behind in cabins by Matt and Sweat are being tested for Sweat’s DNA, sources with knowledge of the investigation tell NBC News. The last place where his DNA was definitively found was in Owls Head, about 10 miles from Malone, on June 20, the sources said.
The heavily wooded area that local, state and federal officers are focusing on in the manhunt for Sweat is about 40 miles away from Clinton Correctional Facility and 20 miles from the Canadian border.
