JERUSALEM — Three Israeli civilians were stabbed in the West Bank on Monday, hours after an Israeli soldier was knifed several times in Tel Aviv – part of a rising tide of violence that raised fears of a new Palestinian uprising. The three civilians were stabbed in Gush Etzion, according to IDF spokesman Peter Lerner who said the suspect was shot by a security guard at the scene. Local media reported that one of the victims was a young woman.
Israeli-Palestinian tensions have festered over access to a Jerusalem compound housing Islam's third holiest site and where biblical Jewish temples once stood. Stone-throwing protests have also erupted in several Arab towns in Israel since Saturday, when police killed an Arab youth who assaulted them.
In the earlier Tel Aviv incident, the Israeli soldier, aged about 20, was taken to hospital after being stabbed several times near a railway station. Police said they arrested a suspect, a Palestinian from the town of Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Five days ago, a Palestinian rammed his car into pedestrians in central Jerusalem, the second such incident of its kind in as many weeks, killing two Israelis.
