Naser Abu Amira and his sons sewed up long tears in a tangle of green plastic fishing nets on the Gaza coast on Tuesday. A 72-hour truce that started earlier allowed Amira and his fellow fishermen to return to the sea after a month-long Israeli bombing campaign. But the 46-year-old fisherman will be starting with even less than he once had -- an Israeli airstrike destroyed much of his equipment, he said, including a GPS and a nets.
Amira said he would like to see a permanent end to the violence, but added he would not agree to a negotiated peace that fell short of Hamas demand that Israel end its blockade of the Gaza Strip. "We should end the siege or die," he said. The day was too windy to fish successfully so Amira only went out briefly. When we found him, he had just returned from fishing the water, where he says he brought in a small load of he sold off for 150 sheckles ($44). Tomorrow, he hopes to catch more.
