The NAACP has asked a Missouri judge to open a new grand jury to probe the Aug. 9 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer.
In a letter to St. Louis Circuit Judge Maura McShane, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund also asked for an investigation of the grand jury proceedings that led to the decision not to indict the officer, Darren Wilson, the Associated Press reported. Wilson is white, and Brown was black. He was also unarmed.
The NAACP claimed there had been confusing instructions to jurors, and cited the controversial decision to allow testimony from witnesses who lied.
Meanwhile, a federal judge extended a temporary restraining order requiring some local Missouri police departments to give protesters the chance to disperse before tear gas is deployed, NBC affiliate KDSK reported. That decision came after an agreement reached between the Missouri State Highway Patrol, city and county police departments and lawyers for some of the Ferguson protesters.
