The St. Louis County medical examiner confirmed to NBC News on Monday that Michael Brown, the unarmed black teenager shot dead by a Ferguson police officer, was hit in the head and the chest.

The medical examiner’s office would not specify how many times Brown was hit, confirming only that it was more than once. The office said that further information on gunshots or on a toxicology report would come from county prosecutors.

A private autopsy commissioned by the Brown family found that the teenager was hit six times, including twice in the head. The toxicologist who performed that autopsy said Monday that every shot except the last, a bullet that went through Brown’s head and entered his brain, was survivable.
