The man accused of shooting two police officers in Ferguson, Missouri, last week appeared in court Monday and was ordered to return in two weeks.

Jeffrey Williams, 20, has admitted firing the shots, but he claims that he was in an argument with someone else and did not mean to hit the officers, authorities have said.

The two officers were shot just after midnight Thursday during a demonstration that followed the resignation of the Ferguson police chief. They were released from the hospital later that day.

Williams did not have a lawyer with him when he appeared in court in nearby Clayton, prosecutors said. He is being held on a $300,000 bond and was told to return to court March 31.
