Cold and calm descended on Ferguson, Missouri, late Wednesday after two nights of violent protests against a grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in unarmed teen Michael Brown’s shooting death. But demonstrators in Los Angeles, Oakland and elsewhere across the country again took to protesting by blocking roads and, in some cases, clashing with police.
Police arrested about 130 demonstrators who had been marching through downtown Los Angeles after police determined the protesters were becoming a hazard to motorists. Police declared an unlawful assembly and later surrounded the group to begin making arrests.
In Oakland, police chased protesters through the streets and made arrests after some people smashed windows at the Oakland Tribune, a CVS and other buildings and also threw rocks and bottles at officers, according to police.
Demonstrations in Denver, Atlanta and elsewhere around the country also continued for a third night but remained calm according to police in those cities.
A handful of protesters outside ground zero at the Ferguson Police Department respected the bad need for calm in the city. Only one arrest was made Wednesday night, St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman said. That was down from at least 44 arrests on Tuesday and more than 80 arrests on Monday in the immediate aftermath of the grand jury decision, when rioters burned 12 buildings and a number of cars and did damage to numerous businesses.
