The Washington high school cafeteria where a student shot five friends last week, killing two of them in addition to himself, may never serve lunch again, the school superintendent said Tuesday night.

Classes are scheduled to resume next week at Marysville Pilchuck High School in Marysville, north of Everett, 10 days after Jaylen Ray Fryberg, a freshman, lured his victims via text message to the cafeteria where he shot them last Friday, authorities said.

Becky Cooke Berg, superintendent of the Marysville School District, said Tuesday that traumatized students shouldn't have to return to the cafeteria. "That was one of their major fears — going back to that scene," she said at a news conference at the school. The cafeteria might be remodeled or "repurposed," she said, but that decision is a long way off. In the meantime, she said, other arrangements for meal service are in the works.
