ISTANBUL — A British woman detained in Turkey on suspicion of attempting to join ISIS was scheduled to be deported back to London on Thursday, Turkish police told NBC News.
The 21-year-old, identified only by the initials J.N.H., was apprehended by security forces at a bus terminal in the capital Ankara on Monday, according to police, who said she was planning to travel to Syria.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, police officials in Ankara and Istanbul told NBC News the woman would be flown from Ankara to London via Istanbul on Thursday.
Britain's Foreign Office and Metropolitan Police confirmed that a U.K. woman had been detained in Turkey. They said they were working with local officials but declined to comment on the details of the case. The U.K.'s Home Office, which handles deportations, told NBC News it does not comment on individual cases.
The woman's detention came days after three British teenagers were stopped by officials in Istanbul on suspicion of planning to join ISIS. Last month three schoolgirls from London traveled to Turkey and were thought to have entered Syria to join the extremists.
