American warplanes launched 11 strikes overnight against the militant group ISIS near the Mosul Dam in Iraq. At least some of the strikes were launched after ISIS released a video purporting to show the beheading of an American journalist and threatening the life of a second unless the United States ends the airstrikes.

Earlier this week, Kurdish soldiers drove ISIS fighters from the dam, the most important in Iraq, which supplies power and water to millions of people. The Kurds thanked the United States for helping dislodge ISIS with airstrikes.
