U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met Thursday with foreign ministers from its Sunni state allies — Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — to discuss how to confront the growing turmoil spawned by a Sunni Muslim insurgency group in Iraq. Kerry also met earlier Thursday with the Sunni former prime minister of Lebanon.

The Obama administration hopes that Iraq's Sunni neighbors — notably Jordan and Saudi Arabia — will use their cross-border tribal networks to bolster the security militias with financing or weapons to curb the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's forces.
