The last of three Americans who thwarted an attack on a passenger train in France last month returned to the United States Thursday, landing to a crowd of supporters at Travis Air Force Base in California.
Airman Spencer Stone, 23, had been recovering from injuries at the U.S. Air Force’s Ramstein base in Germany.
Stone and two friends, Oregon National Guardsman Aleksander Skarlatos and college student Anthony Sadler, have been called heroes for stopping gunman Ayoub El-Khazzani after the Moroccan-born man opened fire on the Amsterdam-to-Paris train on Aug. 21.

Stone was slashed in the head, neck and arm while overpowering El-Khazzani.
Stone, in uniform, smiled as he emerged from an Air Force jet after landing at Travis Air Force Base, located southwest of Sacramento, at around 8 p.m. local time. He was greeted by a large crowd of supporters, including Air Force members.
The three Americans are from Sacramento. The mayor of that city announced Thursday that the three will be honored at the "Sacramento Hometown Heroes Parade" on Sept. 11. Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson hailed the trio’s "incredible courage."

"It’s fitting that we’re having this event on September 11th," Johnson said. "What better way to remember the victims and sacrifices that were made on that tragic day and to celebrate the strength and character of our country"
Stone, Skarlatos, Sadler and another man who helped subdue the gunman, British businessman Chris Norman, were awarded the Legion d'Honneur, France’s highest honor.
