President Michelle Bachelet ordered Chile's army and air force to take control of the region that was hit by a massive earthquake on Tuesday.
Army Brig. Miguel Dilet would be sent to Arica in in the quake zone and Air Force Gen. Arturo Merino would taking command of Tarapaca to "take control of public order and prevent ... looting and disorder," Bachelet said.
Both regions have been declared disaster zones.
Bachalet planned to travel to the affected region on Wednesday.
The magnitude-8.2 temblor struck near the port city of Iquique, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
