Granit Xhaka shoots upper left and scores.
Colombia 1, Switzerland 0 in penalties
Fernando Quintero scores for the first goal.
We’re on to penalties
After 120-plus minutes of open play, the teams combined for less than two expected goals. Not exactly a blistering display of soccer in this one.
Colombia blows a golden opportunity

Granit Xhaka misplayed a ball in the defensive end, leaving Jáminton Campaz with the ball and nobody between him and the goal except the goalkeeper. But Campaz fired his left-footed shot very high of the goal.
Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka misses one-timer high
That was our best chance of the second extra period, as Xhaka had a clean look with his left foot.
The second extra-time period is ongoing
Both sides may be playing for penalties at this point.
Big save from Colombia’s Camilo Vargas

Vargas dived to his left to get his hands on a Zeki Amdouni shot right from the penalty marker.
Clutch save from Switzerland’s Gregor Kobel
Kobel got his hands on a knuckler from Juan Fernando Quintero well outside the box.

Colombia nearly broke the scoreless tie off a corner kick.
Jhon Lucumí made great contact on a header from the middle of the box, but it was too strong and hit the crossbar.
Yellow card for Colombia’s Davinson Sánchez
Chippy start to this extra period, which has featured some physical play over the first five minutes.

The teams will play two 15-minute periods, plus stoppage time in each one.
If we’re still tied after that, we move to penalty kicks.
Full time: Switzerland 0, Colombia 0
Based on how this match has gone so far, I wouldn’t get my hopes up for a winner in extra time. Through 90-plus minutes, neither side has reached even 0.50 in expected goals.
Nearly a winner from Switzerland
Dan Ndoye flicked a ball across the front of the goal, but it was both too far from the goal and too far ahead of any teammates who could finish the play. That was a scary moment for Colombia, though.
Five minutes of stoppage time
This has not been a match to write home about so far. Maybe someone can change that in these final few minutes before extra time.
Ten minutes until stoppage time
Will we see a goal in this match? Neither side has played inspiring offense so far.
Time for the hydration break
Action has come and gone in this match, with short spurts of chances interspersed with plenty of passive play.
Colombia leads in expected goals 0.40 to 0.29, are low marks for both sides.
James Rodriguez comes out for Colombia
So does Jhon Arias. They were replaced by Juan Fernando Quintero and Jáminton Campaz.
Easy save for Switzerland’s Gregor Kobel
Kobel easily handled a dribbling shot from a spinning Luis Díaz, who tried to pump up the crowd after the play. Luis Suárez was then given a yellow card for a foul on Kobel following the shot.
And now a yellow card for Switzerland’s Denis Zakaria
Zakaria is carded for his sliding challenge on Luis Díaz.
Yellow card for Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka
Xhaka stepped on Colombia’s Daniel Muñoz’s foot.
Missed chance for Switzerland
A pass into the box from Dan Ndoye reached Djibril Sow in space, but Sow slipped as he lined up to take the shot, and his right-footer went quite wide of the goal.
The second half is underway!
Let’s see whether either side can break the scoreless tie.
Halftime: Colombia 0, Switzerland 0
Action picked up a little bit after the hydration break. We end the first half with Colombia leading in expected goals 0.25 to 0.06. Both goalies have made saves, but neither side has had a truly great chance yet.
Three minutes of stoppage time
Let’s see whether either side can break the scoreless tie before halftime.
Another Camilo Vargas save
Switzerland is turning up the heat. Once again Camilo Vargas was tested from his right side, and this time he stopped a shot from Dan Ndoye by diving to his left.
Big save from Colombia’s Camilo Vargas
Vargas just made a clutch stop on a shot from Switzerland’s Fabian Rieder, who took a strong shot from the left side of the box.
Time for the hydration break
Colombia finally generated a chance, though Gustavo Puerta’s shot was saved by a diving Gregor Kobel.
Otherwise, not too much going on in this one. Colombia leads in expected goals 0.10 to 0.
Diving save by Switzerland’s Gregor Kobel
Kobel fully extended to stop a right-footed shot by Gustavo Puerta from the left side of the box.
A pretty chill opening 10 minutes
Outside of one near shot on goal on a play that was ultimately ruled offside, not too much action to start this one. It looks like almost a home game for Colombia, with seas of yellow in the crowd.
Switzerland vs. Colombia has kicked off!
The winner will play Argentina on Saturday.

Jay Croucher highlights Colombia's impressive play so far and talented options up front ahead of its World Cup matchup against a Switzerland team that lacks "high-end attacking talent."
Cristiano Ronaldo exits last World Cup with ‘clear conscience’
Cristiano Ronaldo walked off the pitch after his final World Cup match for Portugal with a stoic look on his face and only the slightest hint of emotion. There were a brief wave to acknowledge cheering fans and the same feeling he has had after past losses.
“Sad — it’s normal after being eliminated like this,” said Ronaldo, who briefly shielded his eyes with his right hand after the match.
The sixth and final World Cup for Ronaldo, the 41-year-old superstar, ended with a 1-0 loss to border rival Spain in a round of 16 game yesterday.
“I’ve given everything, I’ve given my best, and I leave with a clear conscience,” he said. “This is soccer, this is life for a soccer player. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.”

Ronaldo is the only player to score goals in six World Cups in a row. The deepest he ever went in the World Cup was the semifinals in his 2006 debut.
Colombia is trying to make its first quarterfinals since 2014
Colombia has not made it to the quarterfinals of the World Cup in over 10 years.
During the 2014 tournament, Colombia defeated Uruguay in the Round of 16 before losing to Brazil in the following round. The quarterfinal appearance in 2014 remains the furthest Colombia has ever advanced in the World Cup.
Argentina may be the most tested team left in the World Cup
What an eventful knockout stage it’s been for Argentina.
First, it survived a heroic effort from Cape Verde in the Round of 32, overcoming multiple equalizers to win in extra time.
Then today, Argentina conceded two goals before mounting an incredible comeback against Egypt.
Two teams have thrown haymakers at the defending champs, and both times Argentina has survived. Is anyone going to knock out Messi and Co.?

Final: Argentina 3, Egypt 2
What an incredible match, as this memorable World Cup continues.
Argentina was trailing 2-0 before scoring three goals from the 79th minute on. Lionel Messi made up for a missed penalty by scoring his tournament-leading eighth goal before Enzo Fernández ultimately headed in the winner.
The defending champs stay alive, while Egypt loses a heartbreaker.
Argentina takes the lead! Unbelievable!
What is happening!
Off a counterattack, Argentina is now in front 3-2.
Enzo Fernández received a cross in the middle of the box from Lautaro Martínez and headed in the go-ahead goal.
Stunning.
Messi leads this World Cup with eight goals scored now
Lionel Messi came through for Argentina in the 83rd minute, and that goal moved him into the lead for the Golden Boot race. France's Kylian Mbappé and Norway's Erling Haaland have both scored seven goals apiece.
Messi has scored at least one goal in all five of his matches in this tournament. He scored a hat trick against Algeria and two goals against Austria in the group stage.
Seven minutes of stoppage time
Argentina remains on the attack as it looks to end this match before extra time.
Goal! Lionel Messi with the equalizer!
Who else!
Lionel Messi has tied this match at 2-2- in the 83rd minute. His left-footed volley from the right side of the box bounced off the crossbar and into the goal.
Argentina so close to an equalizer
Another beautiful run by Messi led to a header right in front of the goal by by Lautaro Martínez, but he bounced it wide right of the goal.
Goal! Argentina is alive!
Off a cross from Lionel Messi, Cristian Romero headed in a ball that went off the hand of Egyptian goalkeeper Moustafa Shoubir into the net.
It’s 2-1 Egypt with still 10 minutes to go until stoppage time.
Messi, Argentina have 15 minutes to score two goals
Plus stoppage time, of course. Lionel Messi had scored in all four of his appearances at this World Cup, entering today.
We’re at the hydration break
Time is running out for Argentina, which is down two goals. Does Messi have any magic left?
Egypt’s second goal may have saved FIFA from controversy
The foul call that wiped out Egypt’s second goal was poised to be a flashpoint moment from this match, particularly if Argentina was in position to come back to win.
The foul occurred well before and very far away from the goal. The FOX broadcast was openly critical of the use of VAR for the play.
In light of the Folarin Balogun situation, another VAR controversy would have been a bad look for the World Cup. Egypt’s second goal may quiet the concerns, however.

Goal! Egypt scores for real this time!
There’s no taking away this one!
Off a counterattack following an Argentina corner, Mo Salah made a spirited run down the middle of the pitch. Salah found Haissem Hassan sprinting down the right side of the field, and then Hassan crossed the ball back into the box for Mostafa Zico, who buried home the goal. Zico had also scored the earlier goal that was removed after a VAR review.
Egypt leads 2-0.
Egypt’s goal wiped out by VAR!
What a turn of events!
Starting with a fantastic run by Haissem Hassan, Mo Salah found Mostafa Zico in the left side of the box, and Zico scored what appeared to be Egypt’s second goal. But a takedown by Egypt's Marawan Attia earlier in the play was ruled a foul by VAR, and the goal was taken away.
History is working against Argentina
The last four times Argentina has conceded first in the World Cup, it has lost the match, per the FOX broadcast.
Another save for Mostafa Shoubir
This time Shoubir stops a dribbling shot by Argentina's Rodrigo De Paul from outside the top of the box.
The second half is underway!
Can Argentina find an equalizer? Could this be the last half of Messi’s World Cup career?
Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir standing tall so far
He made three saves in the first half, as Argentina played with more urgency after the early Egyptian goal, hunting for an equalizer. Look at this stunning save Shoubir made below:
Halftime: Egypt 1, Argentina 0
Egypt leads after the goal from Yasser Ibrahim in the 15th minute. This is the first time Argentina has trailed in the 2026 World Cup, and it’s played like it, attacking aggressively since facing the deficit.
Argentina had a great chance to equalize, but Lionel Messi missed a penalty kick in the 21st minute.
Almost an equalizer for Argentina!
Wow! A left-footed shot by Julián Álvarez was just barely deflected by Egypt goalkeeper Moustafa Shoubir, who had to watch the ball slowly bounce inches outside the right post.
A Messi free kick hits the woodwork!
Another chance for Messi, this time on a free kick from outside the top of the box. His left-footed shot curled around the wall, but hit the post and went out of bounds.
Watch: The Telemundo call of Messi's denied penalty kick
What a dramatic moment.
Lionel Messi has now missed two straight penalties
After also missing a penalty against Austria, Lionel Messi has missed his last two World Cup penalty kicks, outside of penalty shootouts. He now has missed four of his eight penalties taken in his World Cup career.
Hydration break time
What a start to this match, as we’ve already seen a goal and a Messi penalty get stopped. Should be a fun time watching Argentina hunt for an equalizer.
Lionel Messi denied!
What a save!
After Haissem Hassan took down Nicolás Tagliafico in the box, Lionel Messi took the penalty kick, but his shot toward the right side of the goal was stuffed by a diving Mostafa Shoubir!

Penalty for Argentina!
Will Messi line up to take the equalizer?
Goal! Egypt takes the lead!
Wow!
Egypt is up 1-0 after a header from Yasser Ibrahim, who nudged the ball into the net off a fantastic cross from Marawan Attia in the 15th minute.
Argentina is now trailing for the first time this World Cup.
Fairly tentative start so far
We’re about 13 minutes into the first half, and neither side has a great chance. Argentina’s best look at the goal was ruled offside.
Argentina vs. Egypt is underway!
Messi vs. Salah! This one should be fun.

Lionel Messi can jump ahead in Golden Boot race
Messi is currently tied for first in the race, alongside France's Kylian Mbappé and Norway's Erling Haaland. All three players have scored seven goals this tournament. But Mbappé and Haaland have already played their round of 16 matches. Messi has a chance today to surpass them both.
The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals in that year's World Cup.
Egypt coach says 'we're no underdogs' ahead of Argentina match
The last two round of 16 games are today, including Switzerland against Colombia in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in Atlanta.
The Pharaohs got its first knockout stage win by beating Australia on penalties.
Messi has scored seven goals in four matches, the same as Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, in the race for the Golden Boot. Messi has also scored in a record eight straight World Cup matches, dating back to Argentina’s 2022 title run.
Despite coming up against the champions, Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said: “We’re no underdogs. We’re big in every respect. We are a civilization that is 7,000 years old, even more than 7,000 years.”
A disappointing World Cup for Christian Pulisic
United States forward Christian Pulisic could only watch from the bench as Belgium extinguished his team’s World Cup bid, ending a tournament in which the American star was hobbled by injuries and largely ineffective.
The most accomplished U.S. striker, Pulisic was held scoreless in his second World Cup. He has 33 goals in 90 international appearances but has scored just once in eight World Cup games — against Iran in the group stage in 2022.
For the second time in this World Cup, Pulisic left a match in the second half with an injury, leaving Monday’s 4-1 loss to Belgium after twisting his right ankle when he extended for a shot attempt and hit the boot of Belgium captain Youri Tielemans in the 52nd minute.
“I felt really good this summer with the guys and I thought my level was high,” Pulisic said. “It’s disappointing I didn’t quite have the moments I was hoping to and to try to help us to get over this next step of beating a really good team.”
Belgium trolls United States after 4-1 win: 'Overturn this'
After knocking out the U.S., the Belgian team reveled in its success. “Overturn this,” it posted on social media, alongside images of Romelu Lukaku’s goal, cupping his ear to the Seattle crowd. During the match, Lukaku led his teammates in a group imitation of President Donald Trump’s trademark “Y.M.C.A.” dance.
“Overturn this,” was a reference to FIFA suspending a one-game suspension for Folarin Balogun, the American striker, and allowing him to play in the match.
The Red Devils play 2010 champion Spain on Friday at Inglewood, California, for a semifinal berth against France or Morocco.
Folarin Balogun went from the center of controversy to a nonfactor
After a controversial red card, a shocking decision and conspiracies of corruption, the U.S. soccer team started striker Folarin Balogun on Monday night.
It didn’t make a difference.
The U.S. lost 4-1 in a dispiriting match against Belgium, ending its dream of winning a World Cup on home soil. And Balogun, the team’s leading scorer in the tournament, who entered the match at the center of a massive controversy, ultimately proved to make little impact with his presence on the pitch.
What we learned, big and small picture, from the USA’s awful World Cup exit
The United States men’s national team slipped up for the first time this World Cup and looked like they’d never conceived failure as a possibility, playing a baffled 90 minutes where their stars didn’t shine and their wizard lost his magic touch.
In short, Mauricio Pochettino’s Yanks picked a bad time to play their worst game in a long time... or at least since the last time they played Belgium.
Individual errors and legacy-challenging performances abounded throughout a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16 that leaves the USMNT in a sad and strange position coming out of the 2026 World Cup on home soil.
Egypt lacks the 'firepower' to upset Argentina
Jay Croucher analyzes the upcoming Argentina vs. Egypt World Cup matchup and explains why a "very limited" Egypt squad will have a difficult time pulling off the upset against Lionel Messi and Co.
