Argentina and England will meet in semifinals, after both win in extra time

Thanks to its late game-winning goal in Kansas City to beat Switzerland, Argentina moves into the semifinals, where it will face England. La Albiceleste are unbeaten now in their last 12 World Cup matches.

Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring for Argentina on an assist from Lionel Messi before Dan Ndoye equaled the score in the second half for Switzerland. The Swiss endured more than 50 minutes while down to 10 men after Breel Embolo was given a second yellow card for diving, and although the Swiss fought incredibly well to take down the reigning champions, Julián Álvarez's goal late in extra time was too much to overcome. Argentina then added a final goal in stoppage time of extra time to end the match.

Messi's streak of scoring in nine consecutive World Cup matches comes to an end, but Argentina advances anyway.

As extra time entered its own stoppage time, Argentina got a breakaway that saw Thiago Almada charge into the goal box for an initial shot. When it was blocked, Lautaro Martínez kicked in the rebound for a goal that puts Argentina up, 3-1. The celebration is on for Argentina, which is only minutes from meeting England in the semifinal.

In the 111th minute, and with this match appearing to crawl toward penalty kicks with both teams looking exhausted, Argentina takes a 2-1 lead over Switzerland thanks to a curving goal by Julián Álvarez that goes into the top right corner of the net. What an incredible shot by Álvarez.

Seems more and more likely that's how this one will end.

When play resumes, there will be 15 minutes left. Can Argentina take advantage of its one-man advantage? Or will the Swiss successfully get this game to a penalty shootout? Lionel Messi recorded an assist earlier, but he's been relatively quiet otherwise.

Switzerland's defensive wall did its job in the 103rd minute by blocking a free kick from Lionel Messi. The effort continued Switzerland's superb job containing the World Cup's all-time scoring leader.

This time it's Lautaro Martínez who earns a card after a late tackle that came after a Swiss player was already heading out of bounds.

Thiago Almada of Argentina fired a powerful shot about five minutes into extra time but it went barely outside of the near post, glancing off the post as it went just wide. Only a few minutes later on the other end of the pitch, Almada earned a yellow card for tackling a Swiss player with two arms from behind.

Remember, Switzerland is still playing with only 10 men. Can either team score? Or are we destined for a penalty shootout?

With less than two minutes remaining in stoppage time to end this second half, Argentina's Lisandro Martinez jumped off his feet to fire an acrobatic shot off Lionel Messi's corner kick, and it was headed toward the goal for the go-ahead score until a save by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

And with that, this match goes to 30 more minutes of extra time to decide who goes on to the semifinals.

Since this match has gone into added time, Argentina has threatened with multiple attempts on goal, forcing Switzerland to play on its back foot. Is it only a matter of time before Argentina wears down the Swiss defense?

Tied 1-1, this match will get nine minutes of additional time tacked on here at the end. Will either team end it, or are we headed to extra time?

What looked to be a critical moment in this match took place in the 85th minute when Lionel Messi made a quick cut and had the ball on his foot only feet from the Swiss goal. But his shot was stopped, and shortly after he was ruled offside, anyway.

After a yellow card was initially given to Argentina's Leandro Paredes after a sequence that saw Switzerland's Breel Embolo go flying, a VAR check determined that the card was "mistaken identity" — given to the wrong player.

Embolo was given the yellow card for "simulation," trying to simulate over-the-line contact that hadn't taken place by diving to the pitch. His dive would not have been under review if not for the initial yellow card given to Paredes, which triggered a VAR review. Because it was his second yellow card earned in this match, Embolo has been sent off and Switzerland will be forced to play for the last 20-plus minutes down a player.

Embolo left the pitch appearing to cry, as teammates and coaches tried consoling him.

Dan Ndoye ties this match in the 67th minute after creating a give-and-go opportunity that allowed him to pass off the ball, cut behind Argentina's defense down the left, and score with a surgical shot right after getting the ball back. Switzerland had been threatening for several minutes to score in the second half, and finally takes advantage of an opportunity.

After having the ball inside Argentina's half of the pitch for seemingly minutes, Switzerland was able to at last generate two decent looks at a goal, but each time the shot was saved by Argentina keeper Emiliano Martínez. His first save by Dan Ndoye required a diving save to Martínez's left.

Before this year, the Three Lions had been among the final four teams at the World Cup only three times previously: 2018, 1990, and 1966. England will play the winner of this Argentina vs. Switzerland game. The Three Lions will be looking to win their first World Cup trophy in 60 years, since 1966.

Switzerland's Breel Embolo had a chance to take an open shot with no one between him and Argentina's goalkeeper but instead passed to teammate Dan Ndoye. Ndoye didn't shoot on his first touch of the ball, though, and that slight hesitation to control the ball and gather for a shot left just enough time for Argentina to swoop in to block the shot.

The referee also raised the offsides flag on Switzerland, meaning it was all for naught anyway.

Argentina still leads 1-0. The winner will face England in the semifinals.

Outside of Argentina's goal in the 10th minute, this has been a back-and-forth match and Switzerland hasn't looked cowed by the early deficit. This feels like a wide-open match as we enter the second half.

Breel Embolo was given a yellow card in the 44th minute after he ran through Leandro Paredes of Argentina, sending him flying.

Argentina came into this match averaging 53% of possession across its matches this tournament, but during this first half its share of possession is down to 46%, according to FIFA's match statistics.

Switzerland has done an admirable job trying to give itself chances but has struggled to convert them. Case in point: A free kick in the 42nd minute that sailed too far past Argentina's goal to have any real threat.

In a break for Argentina, no penalty kick was awarded to Switzerland after forward Breel Embolo charged into the 18-yard box while fending off defender Lisandro Martinez to his left when Argentina's goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez, charged out of the goal to stop the run before it could lead to a shot.

Martínez slide-tackled Embolo, sending him flying, but no penalty was given after the keeper took out both the ball and the man with his tackle.

Thanks to its goal in the 10th minute, Argentina has put pressure on Switzerland early in this match. Switzerland, making its first quarterfinal since 1954, is trailing for the first time all tournament.

Switzerland's Djibril Sow took a hard shot in the 19th minute that was hit like a line drive — right into the waiting arms of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. That was Switzerland's second attempt on goal tonight, one fewer than Argentina thus far.

Lionel Messi, who assisted on Argentina's first goal tonight, has been a sure bet to score himself. He has scored in his last nine World Cup matches, a record, including six consecutive matches in the knockout stage.

After Alexis Mac Allister had an early shot blocked by a Swiss defender close to the goal, he wouldn't be denied a second time.

Mac Allister leapt to head in a corner kick from Lionel Messi in the ninth minute to give reigning champion an early 1-0 lead over Switzerland. It's the earliest Argentina has scored in this tournament.

In Kansas City, players from Switzerland and Argentina paused before kickoff for a moment of silence to remember Jayden Adams, who died Saturday at 25, only weeks after taking part in this World Cup with South Africa.

The final spot in the semifinals is up for grabs. The winner tonight will face England on Wednesday.

Pickford collided with one of his own teammates and immediately fell to the pitch. Norway players were furious play was stopped, and Kristoffer Ajer received a yellow for arguing.

Bobb had a chance off a corner, but his shot deflected off a defender over the goal.

Haaland was subbed out after the first extra period, taking Norway’s top goal scorer out of the match.

Nyland keeps this a one-goal game by stopping Djed Spence and Bukayo Saka on back-to-back shots.

Heggem looks to have some kind of foot injury, and now the match has been stopped for an unofficial timeout, which will extend stoppage time.

Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland took too long to clear the ball and his kick was deflected by Djed Spence, and the ball just barely bounced over the goal.

And now England misses an incredible chance.

A Bukayo Saka cross made it into the front of the net after Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland missed the ball on a dive, but two England players couldn’t get to the ball with an open net in front of them.

England’s goalkeeper easily handled a right-footed shot from Antonio Nusa.

Norway has been the more attacking side in the second half, but all the knocking on the door hasn’t led to any goals.

After Jordan Pickford punched out a corner, Norway had multiple chances to score, but one header hit the crossbar, and then Erling Haaland couldn’t get to a loose ball in front of the goal. Absolute chaos, but England survives.

Exciting action so far this half, with a goal taken off the board due to a VAR review and both sides looking to attack.

Norway leads in expected goals 0.38 to 0.27. It will be interesting to see how these teams fare in the hot, humid weather as this match goes on.

England’s only goal from this match maybe should have been disallowed.

Video from the Fox broadcast shows a Norway goal kick hitting the camera wire before quickly falling to the ground. England immediately took possession of the ball and scored moments later.

Norway briefly took a 2-1 lead, but a VAR review found a foul on Erling Haaland, wiping out the goal. We’re still tied 1-1.

England played with fire and got burned!

After England conceded a second straight corner, this time Norway capitalized. After a Jordan Pickford save, the rebound bounced right to the left foot of Torbjørn Heggem, who blasted the ball into the goal.

The play is being reviewed for a potential foul and offside, however.

Apparently before Jude Bellingham’s first-half goal, Norway’s goal kick prior to the goal may have hit one of the camera wires above the field, allowing England to take possession of the ball, per the Fox broadcast.

This one came off an Erling Haaland header, which Pickford shoved aside for a corner.

Let’s see if either side can break the tie before full time.

What an exciting first half. England was dominating possession until a Norway burst led to a goal from Andreas Schjelderup.

That lit a fire under England, which answered via a goal from Jude Bellingham.

Sørloth had the ball and Norway had a 2-on-1, with Erling Haaland running to Sørloth’s left. But Sørloth stayed on the ball as opposed to passing it, and his decision allowed England’s defense to catch up and break up the chance.

Norway just had two great chances after scoring.

Alexander Sørloth had a left-footed volley from inside the box that went just over the net. Moments later, Martin Ødegaard took a left-footed shot that required a save from Jordan Pickford.

Wow!

After England’s Jordan Pickford stopped an Erling Haaland header, Norway came back moments later after a takeaway on Harry Kane to take the lead.

Andreas Schjelderup lined up a kick from a tight angle left of the goal and crushed it into the net off the far post.

Norway leads 1-0.

Norway finally managed to apply some pressure in the attacking third, leading to a loose ball dribbling in the box. Erling Haaland was attempting to chase it down, but he couldn’t reach the ball before goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

That was a close call for England.

England had a free kick from just outside the box, but Kane’s kick sailed well above the crossbar.

A cross from Noni Madueke found Nico O’Reilly in the left side of the box, but O’Reilly couldn’t muster enough on a volley shot with a relatively open goal in front of him.

We’re now at the hydration break, with England leading in expected goals 0.06 to 0.00. Not the most thrilling match so far.

A cross headed toward Bellingham in the center of the box, but he couldn’t make strong contact with the ball with his head.

Tentative start so far, as neither side has registered a shot in the opening 10 minutes.

Adams, 25, played in three matches for South Africa during the World Cup. The country’s sports ministry announced Saturday that Adams had died.

Harry Kane refused to be drawn into comparisons with fellow striker Erling Haaland yesterday as the England captain prepares for a World Cup quarterfinal showdown with Norway that could go some way to deciding who wins the tournament’s Golden Boot.

When asked who the better striker is, Kane — who won the World Cup Golden Boot in 2018 — diplomatically sidestepped the question.

“Impossible one for me to answer. First of all, I think we’re completely different players almost. I know we’re both senior strikers, but we play almost two different positions,” Kane told reporters.

“I see myself as a different player, although I score the same goals. I like to maybe touch the ball a little bit more, but I can also play as maybe the out-and-out nine.”

An unlikely hero has catapulted Spain into the semifinals of the World Cup.

In the 88th minute of a quarterfinal against Belgium on Friday, Spanish defender Pau Cubarsí launched a long-range shot outside the box that Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens blocked but bobbled. Mikel Merino, who had substituted in only two minutes earlier, sprinted in and slammed the ball home to give his team a lead it would not relinquish.

England captain Harry Kane has confirmed he once played golf with U.S. President Donald Trump, describing the experience as “surreal” and praising the president’s game.

Trump told reporters earlier this week that he had played golf with Kane, calling the England striker a great player and a good golfer.

Speaking on the eve of their World Cup quarterfinal match against Norway, Kane confirmed the round took place in Palm Beach, Florida, about 18 months ago.

“I played all right, to be honest,” Kane told reporters in Miami. “He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach. So yeah, when the president invites you somewhere ...”
