Alysa Liu leads the Americans after a heartbreaking error from Amber Glenn
In an unexpected turn of events, Alysa Liu now leads the Americans in the women's figure skating competition as she heads into Thursday's free skate in third position.
Liu is behind Japanese skaters Ami Nakai and Kaori Sakamoto but is the only Team USA skater currently in medal contention after a heartbreaking mistake from Amber Glenn.

Glenn was one of only two skaters who performed a triple axel in today's short program but faltered when she failed to complete her triple loop. She was not the only skater to make the mistake, as Canadian Madeline Schizas also offered a double loop rather than a triple.
Judges scored the error as an invalid element, meaning they received no points in a huge blow to their technical scores. But unlike Schizas, Glenn will still qualify for Thursday's event.
Glenn will enter the free skate in 13th place, while teammate Isabeau Levito is in eighth place following her Olympic debut today.
Amber Glenn misses the mark in the short program
With only one skater to go, American skater Amber Glenn fell to 12th place in the women's short program.
Glenn nailed her triple axel, soaring into the air on her hardest jump of the program. But she faltered later in the program with just a double loop when it should have been a triple loop instead. That was marked as an invalid element that earned her zero points.

It was clear Glenn was emotional at the end of her skate, crying as she skated to her coaches. She scored 67.39, which will be difficult to recover from in Thursday's free skate.
Glenn's routine was approved by Madonna herself. The "Like a Virgin" singer wished Glenn luck ahead of her performance today after learning that the skater would be doing a routine to her song.
Japan's Kaori Sakamoto bumps Alysa Liu to third
Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto went into second place with a beautiful short program — but fell just shy of her score during the short program in the team event, when she won first place.
This puts American Alysa Liu in third place as her teammate Amber Glenn takes the ice.

Isabeau Levito's Olympic debut is a hit with the crowd
Team USA's Isabeau Levito is now in fifth place with a timeless routine in her short program for her Olympic debut.
The 18-year-old wowed with a graceful performance that included beautiful extensions and spins. There are still four skaters left to compete, including her American teammate Amber Glenn, but Levito clinched her qualification for Thursday's free skate even if she's not in the top three.
The judges gave Levito a 70.84, a few points shy of her season best 73.37, but the crowd gave her a resounding applause regardless.

Mac Forehand says he landed new trick because he 'had to fight for the gold'
USA's Mac Forehand told reporters after the men’s big air final that pulling off a 2160-degree nose-butter triple cork, a jump that almost earned him gold, was “a pipe dream.” He had learned versions of the jump with fewer rotations, but this Olympic run was the first time he attempted the six-rotation 2160. And he landed it.
“That’s just how it goes in competing, like you just feel those nerves and those vibes and it just helps so much,” Forehand said.

He said after having already locked in a podium position with two of his best tricks (one of which being the hardest he’s ever done), he contemplated just performing a simple straight-air jump “because these tricks are so dangerous and so gnarly.” But he decided he had to go big.
“I couldn’t do that. I had to fight for the gold,” Forehand said. “I was in that moment. It’s hard to be in that position ever again. Like, second place, last run, you have to go, you have to bump the first-place person out.”
Alysa Liu floats into second with ethereal performance and a season best
American figure skater Alysa Liu offered an emotional performance at the top of the final wave for today's short program, putting herself in the second-place spot so far.
Set to "Promise" by Laufey, Liu nailed her routine with stunning spins and effortless jumps — including a difficult triple lutz, triple loop combination toward the end of her program.
"I kinda liked that," Liu laughed as she exited the ice and greeted her coaches.
The judges gave Liu a 76.59. Her season best before today's performance was 75.79.
Team USA's 'Blade Angels' take the ice for warmups
Americans Alysa Liu, Isabeau Levito and Amber Glenn have taken the ice with the final wave of figure skaters in today's short program.
The three women, who call themselves the "Blade Angels," are contenders for the podium and fan favorites in the figure skating world. Liu will take the ice first, quickly followed by Levito. Glenn will perform second to last in the short program.
Georgia's Anastasiia Gubanova is in the final wave, as are Japanese skaters Kaori Sakamoto and Mone Chiba. The three women are also considered to be in medal contention and are some of Team USA's fiercest competition on the ice.
Amber Glenn says coming out is a big reason why she's a medal contender
Glenn will become the first out woman to figure skate at an Olympics, according to Outsports, a website that has tracked LGBTQ athletes since 1999. She said it's a major reason why she's enjoyed recent success on the ice.
“It was something that did set me free,” Glenn said in the run-up to the Olympics. “I was able to feel like I wasn’t being pressured into trying to fill someone else’s shoes.”

Germany sweeps podium again in two-man bobsled

Why Alysa Liu is a medal favorite
Alysa Liu is expected to compete for gold in Italy after winning one in Boston at the world championships last March, a victory that cemented her comeback as much more serious than sentimental.
“Everything about that performance was just amazing,” said Philip Hersh, an NBC Sports contributor and longtime Olympic writer who covered Liu’s win in Boston. “It was awe-inspiring, and she landed jump after jump. I’ve seen very few other skaters ever top that, in terms of doing two flawless performances on the biggest stage — other than the Olympics — in your sport.”
Liu's success has partially stemmed from more control over her career: She has had much more input on her costumes, music and training schedule.
“She hates this term, but we almost call it Alysa 2.0,” said Phillip DiGuglielmo, Liu’s longtime coach who has worked with her before and after her retirement. “It’s like a reboot, in a way. Before, literally, she never disagreed with anything anybody ever said. But now she has complete freedom to chime in and we respect that. So, she exercises her right all the time.”
Devastation for Canada's Madeline Schizas after a rough skate
Canada’s Madeline Schizas is in danger of not qualifying for Thursday's event after a series of mistakes including an invalid element in her short program.
Schizas is in 15th place with a score of 55.38, placing her on the edge of the bottom five. One person will have to skate worse than her in order for the Canadian to move on to the next figure skating competition.
It was evident on Schizas' face the moment she finished her "The Lion King"-inspired routine that she knew she was in trouble. She apologized to her coach the moment she reached the edge of the rink.
"I can't believe I did that," Schizas was heard saying as she waited for her score.

The energy has picked up at the women’s single skating event
After an electrifying performance by Japan’s Ami Nakai, the energy at tonight’s figure skating event has undergone quite a shift. As we approach our last 10 or so performers, the programs are picking up in both difficulty and excitement. The crowd has responded accordingly.
Japan's Ami Nakai flies into first with a triple axel
Japan’s Ami Nakai has dethroned Adeliia Petrosian for the top spot in today's short program so far.
Petrosian, a neutral athlete, has been in the first position for much of today's figure skating event with a score of 72.89. But Nakai scored a season best of 78.71 with an energetic routine that included a triple axel.
The Japanese skater is one of only two competitors who have a triple axel on their planned elements. American Amber Glenn is the other.

Sweden won out against Norway in the men’s curling preliminaries with a score of 7-4. Sweden started out with a wider lead of 4-1, but Norway managed to somewhat narrow the gap before taking the loss.
These women are having some of their best skates today
The three figure skaters at the top of the leaderboard so far in the short program have all scored their season best on the Olympic ice.
Adeliia Petrosian remains at the top of the leaderboard with a score of 72.89, compared with her prior season best of 68.72, but the competition is getting close and closer. Korean Haein Lee is just behind her with a score of 70.07, more than 3 points higher than her season best before today.
And rounding out the podium contenders is Kazakhstan's Sofia Samodelkina, who scored just a point above her season best with a 68.47.
Switzerland beats Germany in men's curling
Switzerland crushed Germany in the men’s curling preliminaries, keeping a consistent lead before ending the game with a score of 8-4.

The bottom 5 skaters of the day won't make it to the free skate
As the competition picks up, those at the bottom of the leaderboard of today's figure skating short program are in danger of being cut from the Winter Olympics.
Only 24 out of the 29 skaters of today will continue to Thursday's free skate. The combined scores from both the short and free skate will determine who goes home with medals in women's individual figure skating.
The five skaters at the bottom of the board today, so far, are: France's Lorine Schild, neutral athlete Viktoriia Safonova, Lithuania's Meda Variakojyte, Bulgaria's Alexandra Feigin and Britain's Kristen Spours.
Switzerland's Livia Kaiser was in trouble of being in this group after a fall in her routine earlier, but a tough skate from Schild pushed Kaiser into qualification position by just six-hundredths of a point.
Norway's Frostad squeaks by Team USA's Forehand in neck-and-neck big air final
Gold goes to Norway after all in the men’s big air final. Norwegian skier Tormod Frostad and Team USA's Mac Forehand were neck and neck for the top podium spot during their three runs.
Forehand overtook Frostad’s first-place position with an astonishing score of 98.25 on his third run, before Frostad stole the show yet again with a score of 98.50 — finally securing first place for Norway.

USA's Konnor Ralph lands new trick during big air final
Team USA’s Konnor Ralph, 23, appeared to shock even himself after landing a 2160-degree triple cork in his final run. It was his first time ever performing the trick in competition, causing Ralph — who just earned a score of 91.50 in his Olympic debut — to exclaim, “No way,” after landing.
Norway's Tormod Frostad is dominating big air finals
Norway’s Tormod Frostad continues his massive lead in the second run of the men's big air finals, earning a whopping 97.00 from the judges and putting him in a likely position to take gold.
Austria’s Matej Svancer took second place with 95.25, followed closely by USA’s Mac Forehand with 95 — the same score he earned in his first run.

Top 3 skaters so far have outdone themselves
Adeliia Petrosian, a neutral individual athlete, still leads the pack after a second wave of figure skaters hit the ice for the women's short program.
Finnish skater Iida Karhunen is currently in second place, and third is now held by Julia Sauter from Romania. All three have beat their season best today, but the leaderboard can change quickly as nearly 20 skaters are still left to compete.
A third wave of skaters from Switzerland, Poland, Korea, Kazakhstan and France are taking the ice now to warm up ahead of their routines.
Ten skaters down, 19 to go
Hope you’ve had your afternoon espresso back in the States, because there are still 19 skaters left to perform in tonight’s women’s figure skating short program event, including all three Americans.
Among the first 10 performers, the top four skaters all posted season-best scores. The Olympics is bringing the best out of this group!
Dylan Deschamps lands second run, after breaking skis in first
Canadian Dylan Deschamps was back for his second run with a different set of skis, after breaking his first set during a fall in the opening run. Deschamps redeemed himself by landing the trick this time, earning him a score of 91.00.
Norway leads men's big air finals after first run
After the first run of the men’s big air finals, Norway’s Tormod Frostad leads the pack with a score of 95.25. He performed a nose butter that earned him the top spot.
American Mac Forehand tied for second place with Norway’s Birk Ruud, both men earning a score of 95.00 after performing a 2160-degree triple cork and switch triple cork, respectively.
Dylan Deschamps breaks his skis in men's big air final
In the first run of the men’s big air finals, Canada’s Dylan Deschamps fell into the snow after attempting a switch triple, snapping one of his skis entirely. Deschamps earned a score of 20.75.

Switzerland's Livia Kaiser falls during short program
Switzerland's Livia Kaiser was unfortunately the first skater to fall during the women's short program today.
Kaiser was performing a routine to Whitney Houston's rendition of "I Will Always Love You" when she faltered on a landing and hit the ice. The crowd showed her love after she got up and continued her routine.
Though she had a single point deduction for the fall, Kaiser still scored a 55.69 and moved into the third position on the leaderboard.

The second group of skaters is hitting the ice
The next five skaters are warming up as the short program of the women’s individual figure skating competition continues. The next group includes Switzerland’s Livia Kaiser, Israel’s Mariia Seniuk, Bulgaria’s Alexandra Feigin, Romania’s Julia Sauter and Austria’s Olga Mikutina.
A peek at the food at tonight’s women’s figure skating event
In the media lounge at women’s figure skating, there are food options ranging from the rustic northern dish pizzocherri to a ham and cheese focaccia for only 7 euro.
I opted for the focaccia, which is ... delicious. Crispy, melty, gooey, it’s an ode to Italian ingenuity. The same sandwich in the U.S. would probably cost five times as much and be studded with gold flakes or have fireworks shooting out of the middle.
Instead, this is Italian simplicity at its best — ham, Asiago and good bread.
Adeliia Petrosian tops the leaderboard after first wave of skaters
Figure skater Adeliia Petrosian is in first place with a score of 72.89 after the first five skaters in the women's short program.
Petrosian is Russian but is competing at the Winter Olympics under the neutral athlete designation since Russia's Olympic Committee was banned following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
She is likely to stay on top of the leaderboard for a bit longer, thanks to an impressive Micheal Jackson-inspired routine where she outdid her own season-best score of 68.72.

First wave of skaters take the ice for warmups
The first five skaters have made their way onto the ice for today's women's figure skating short program.

Perrot powers France to first gold medal in men’s biathlon relay
France’s Eric Perrot overcame a wobble on the final shoot and a late surge from Norway’s Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen to win a sensational first men’s relay gold medal for his country today.
Christiansen did his best but could not close the gap on the last lap and had to be content with the silver medal, 9.8 seconds behind the winners. Sweden’s Sebastian Samuelsson shot clean on his final visit to the range to secure bronze for his team.
The gold was France’s 16th medal at these Winter Games, its greatest haul ever, and in winning this event, Quentin Fillon Maillet became France’s most decorated Winter Olympian with eight medals in all, five of them gold.
Each biathlete faced three laps of a 2.5 km track and two visits to the shooting range — one prone, one standing — where up to three misses could be atoned for with an extra shot before a penalty lap was incurred.

Team USA lose out to Canada in women's team pursuit semifinal
Team USA came out of the starting blocks fast in the first of the women's team pursuit semifinals, but the Canadian trio reeled them in as the race went on. In the end, the U.S. trio of Giorgia Birkeland, Brittany Bowe and Mia Manganello run out of gas, and it's ends up being a relatively straightforward win for Canada.

Ilia Malinin gives first interview since failing to medal
Ilia Malinin admitted Tuesday on “TODAY” he was not prepared to handle the spotlight of the Olympics, giving his most extensive comments since his shocking performance at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
Malinin entered the 2026 Winter Games under an intense spotlight. He was heavily expected to win a gold medal in the men’s figure skating individual event, a competition he has dominated internationally over the last few years. But after a stellar short program, he was deducted 72 points during a mistake-filled free skate.

“Honestly, it’s not a pleasant feeling is the most honest way to say it,” Malinin said of the high expectations he felt at the Olympics. “So many eyes, so much attention. It really can get to you if you’re not ready to fully embrace it. That may be one of the mistakes I made, I was not ready to handle that to the fullest extent.”
Team USA's women's curlers back in action against Denmark
After the men's side were beaten this morning, Team USA's women's curlers have taken to the ice where they are taking on Denmark.
The round-robin stage of the women's curling is very tight so far, with each team having played six of their nine matches. Sweden has won all six of their matches and is all but assured of a top-four spot and a place in the medal playoffs. Team USA are one of three teams behind them with a 4-2 record, and Denmark sits just behind them at 3-3.
So this is going to be a crucial match for Team USA's hopes of contending for a medal.

Thumbs down for slopestyle postponement as men's aerials qualifiers also off
Too much snow at the Winter Olympics — who'd have thought it?!
The snow is still tumbling down in Livigno. As mentioned earlier, the women's snowboard slopestyle final has been postponed for today, and now we're hearing the men's ski aerials qualifying is also officially off. The women's aerials haven't been cancelled as of yet, but it's going to be a while at best until we see some action in Livigno.
Boosted by three consecutive gold medal days, Australia sets nation’s Winter Olympics record
When you think of Australia, you think of sunshine, beaches and surfing, not winter sports.
The Australian athletes at Milan Cortina, however, may begin to change your mind.
With several days of competition still ahead, the nation has already had its most successful Winter Olympics to date. The 53-athlete roster — the second-largest Australian Winter Olympic contingent — has brought home five total medals, surpassing the previous best of four that was achieved at the 2022 Beijing Games.
Though Australia entered the 2026 Games with just 20 total Winter Olympic medals, the nation has been consistently represented for the last several decades. The first Aussie podium finish was in the 5000m short track speed skating relay at the 1994 Lillehammer Games, when the team of Steven Bradbury, Kieran Hansen, Andrew Murtha and Richard Nizielski took home the bronze.
Team USA beaten by China in men's curling in blow to medal hopes
Team USA's men's curlers have been beaten by China this morning in a blow to their hopes of making the medal playoffs.
Things looked bleak for Team USA after conceding three points in the eighth end to put them 5-2 down with two ends to go. But a big response from the U.S.team made sure they got those points straight back, levelling it up going into the final end.

But China had the hammer in the final end, and they used it to devastating effect as they claimed three points to seal an 8-5 victory. The U.S. team slipped to 4-3 with the defeat, tied with Great Britain for fourth place. The top four progress to the playoffs.
China were 1-5 coming into this match-up, so this will go down as a disappointing result for Team USA. They will have a chance for redemption later on when they take to the ice for their penultimate round-robin match against Italy at 1:05 p.m. ET. Win that and their final match against Great Britain tomorrow, and the U.S. will progress. Lose any of them, and the U.S. are likely in trouble.
In better news for Team USA, Germany, another of the teams in the mix for a playoff position, suffered a surprise defeat to Czechia this morning, who came from behind in the final end to win 9-7 for their first win in the tournament.
Women's slopestyle final postponed amid heavy snowfall in Livigno
Snow is coming down heavily in Livigno, and that is causing scheduling chaos at the moment.
Today's women's snowboard slopestyle final, scheduled for 7 a.m. ET, has been postponed, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has announced, after athletes were unable to practice this morning. It is unclear whether it can take place today or another day.

Qualifying for aerials is also postponed for now. Both events involve skiers flipping through the air, and the heavy snow means poor visibility, making it too dangerous to go ahead.
U.S. could get its first gold in team pursuit speedskating
The men’s and women’s team pursuits will finish today at Milano Speed Skating Stadium.
The United States, which has never won a gold medal in the team pursuit (men’s or women’s), is the gold-medal favorite in the men’s event. The U.S. men will race against China in the semifinals.
The trio of Ethan Cepuran, Casey Dawson and Emery Lehman are the reigning world champions and set the world record in November. The team won a bronze medal in this event in Beijing.

Aerials qualifying underway as Team USA looks to break China's grip on gold
The freeskiers are about to take to the skies in Livigno as they take part in qualifying for the Aerials.
This event sees athletes launch themselves off a jump — known as a "kicker" — as they twist and flip through the air before landing. A panel of judges gives scores based on the tricks performed, form and landing. Think of it essentially as skiing’s equivalent of gymnastics’ vault.
In qualifying, the top six out of the 25-strong field advance to the finals after the first qualifying run. For those who don't progress, the scores reset, and they get a second go to compete for the remaining six spots in the final.

The women will be going first this morning with Kaila Kuhn, who won the world title in this event last year, and Winter Vinecki, being Team USA's strongest medal hope, though both have had rocky seasons in the build-up to the Games.
Men's qualifying follows at 7:30 a.m. ET with Quinn Dehlinger, who is dating Kuhn, on paper the strongest of the four Team USA skiers competing. China won gold in both the men's and women's events in Beijing four years ago, and is a strong contender for the podium again.

Ilia Malinin discusses ‘invisible battles’ and ‘insurmountable pressure’
U.S. figure skater Ilia Malinin appeared to address his subpar performance at the Olympics in a social media post yesterday.

Writing in a caption on Instagram, Malinin alluded to “invisible battles” he has been fighting. After his free skate in the men’s single skating event last week dropped him from first to eighth place (in an event he was heavily favored to win), Malinin admitted his head was flooded with negative thoughts before he was set to perform.
“On the world’s biggest stage, those who appear the strongest may still be fighting invisible battles on the inside,” Malinin posted on Instagram on Monday. “Even your happiest memories can end up tainted by the noise. Vile online hatred attacks the mind and fear lures it into the darkness, no matter how hard you try to stay sane through the endless insurmountable pressure. It all builds up as these moments flash before your eyes, resulting in an inevitable crash.”

A throwback to Team USA's record day 16 years ago
This date 16 years ago at the Vancouver Winter Games was a day to remember for Team USA as they took home a haul of six medals — three gold, one silver and two bronze. It's the most they have ever won on a single day of winter competition.
The day started off with one of Lindsey Vonn's greatest days as she took what is the only Olympic gold medal she has won in her career in the women's downhill. Team USA went 1-2 in that event, with Julia Mancuso joining Vonn on the medal podium.

Then, it was over to the speed skating arena for another double-podium for Team USA — Shani Davis topping the podium in the men's 1000m with Chad Hendrick claiming bronze.
Finally, as night fell on Cypress Mountain, Shaun White delivered gold in the men's halfpipe, with Scotty Lago winning bronze.
Team USA went on to finish the Vancouver Games with 37 medals — still the most medals won in a single Winter Olympics by Team USA. As it stands, the U.S. has won 19 medals in these Games.
