The Giants are releasing quarterback Daniel Jones, officially ending a disappointing run in New York that resulted in just one playoff appearance in six seasons.
The decision came after Jones, who was officially benched this week and demoted to the fourth-string, came to see team officials and asked for the release, the team said Friday.
"Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way," Giants president John Mara said in a statement on X.
"We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future."
The quarterback addressed the media on Thursday for the first time since his benching was announced.
"But at the end of the day, this is football. We’re in a business where you're expected to get results and we weren’t doing it," Jones said.
The Giants, who are 2-8 this season and are likely taking a new quarterback in next year's draft, went 24-45-1 with Jones leading the team.

Jones, who was selected sixth overall out of Duke University in 2019, was likely getting cut from the team in the offseason. He had signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension after the 2022 season, coming off his best year where he led the team to the playoffs.
But he got off to a rocky start last season, missing games with a neck injury. His season ended after Week 9 when he tore his ACL in his right knee. Jones, 27, was facing an offseason move since the team would be able to have up to $20 million freed up for next season's salary cap.
